HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

Laser hair removal is one of most common cosmetic procedures done in America.  Laser emit a beam of energy that is highly concentrated into hair follicle. The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the light which destroys the hair follicle leaving the skin smooth and without any hair. The treated hair may take 7-14 days to exfoliate and may appear to be growing during this phase.

WHAT CAUSES ABNORMAL HAIR GROWTH?

Abnormal hair growth can occur due to irregular hormones, heredity, and some medical conditions like polycystic ovaries, pituitary tumors.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

Permanent hair reduction treatments can cause up to 90% reduction in hair in about 6-9 treatments.

IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL PAINFUL?

Majority of patients can tolerate laser hair treatments very well. Usually a mild stinging or a rubber band snapping is felt during the treatment. It does not need any anesthesia or pain medication. In some cases topical anesthetic can be applied when requested. In most cases the chiller attached to the laser is effective in giving adequate pain relief.

IS HAIR REMOVAL BY LASERS SAFE?

As with any medical treatments laser hair removal may have some side effects, though they are usually mild and easily managed. The treatment parameters for each patient are modified depending on the hair follicle, color of skin, type of hair and amount of growth.

WHAT IS THE LASER HAIR REMOVAL PROCEDURE LIKE?

Before the procedure is done the hair in the area to be treated are shaved, the area is cleaned with alcohol. The area to be treated is  pulsed with laser light for a fraction of a second at a time. Pulses penetrate the skin without damaging the surrounding skin tissue and is absorbed in the hair follicle. Heat is created which destroys the hair follicle.

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

All individuals can be treated for hair reduction by lasers. The treatments are customized depending on the individual color, tone and texture of the hair and the treated regions. Nearly all skin tones and hair color can be treated successfully. Grey hair can not be treated. Blonde and light hair take much more treatments to get a significant reduction in hair.

HOW MANY LASER HAIR TREATMENTS WILL BE REQUIRED?

The hair grows in three phases. The hair in active growth phase “Anogen” is treated by the lasers. Not all hair is in the active growth phase. The growth phases vary from person to person and from area to area. For some individuals several treatments may be necessary to disable the hair follicle. Each client will be advised about the approximate number of treatments that may b e necessary to get a reduction in hair.

ARE LASER HAIR TREATMENTS PERMANENT?

The FDA approves laser hair treatments for a ” permanent reduction” in hair and not “permanent elimination”. Some touch ups will be needed in the future.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Side effects are not common. Mild redness, slight scabbing and irritation can occur in and around the treated area. It usually disappears in a few days. In rare cases burns may occur, the area treated can become lighter or darker.

WHAT BODY AREAS CAN BE TREATED BY LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

All body parts that have hair can be treated.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE BEFORE HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

Patients should avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, sunless tanning creams before, during and after the course of laser treatments. Patient should shave treatment area within twenty four hours of the treatment. Following laser treatment activities, such as swimming, sports and or strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 24 hours or until redness subsides.
