BOTOX AND DYSPORT

Wrinkles are a natural consequence of aging but can make you look older than you want. They form due to natural aging, laughing, frowning, too much sun and pollution. You see them as crow’s feet, frown lines in between the eyebrows, and horizontal lines in the forehead.

BOTOX FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT CAUSES WRINKLES?

Frown lines that form in between the eyebrows, around the eyes and in the forehead are due to muscle movement. When the muscles contract they bring the eyebrows together or raise or lower the eyebrows. With time skin looses its elasticity and the muscles can lead to forming moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows. Same way when we raise our eyebrows it can lead to horizontal lines on the forehead and smile lines around the eyes.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox is a purified protein derived from Clostridium Botulinum Bacteria that is injected. It is injected in minute amounts in the muscles which we want to be paralyzed so that the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles can be reduced.

Botox Injections

It was introduced in the 1960s to treat neurological disorders and in 1989 to treat eye muscle disorder, like Stribismus or crossed eyes, Blephrospasm and uncontrollable blinking of the eyes. In the year 2000 it was approved for treating Cervical Dystonia a disorder of the neck causing pain and spasm of the neck muscles.

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?

When a nerve sends an impulse to the muscle the nerve ending releases a neurotransmitter which is a chemical known as Acetylcholine, which goes to the muscle membrane and makes it contract. Botox prevents the nerve ending from releasing the chemical Acetylcholine and thus the muscle does not contract, thereby reducing the fine lines and wrinkles. In time the nerve ending recovers its ability to release Acetylcholine and the effect of Botox wears off.

WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS FROM BOTOX?

Botox usually starts working about two to three days after injection. In the beginning the results may be uneven. Maximum results are seen in about two weeks. One should wait about two weeks to get more Botox is they do not get enough results. Once the muscles relax you will see a fresher, relaxed and more youthful appearance. Effect of Botox starts to wear off after three to four months so it lasts up to four months.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX?

The side effects with Botox are very minimal, temporary and rare. They include bruising, pain on injection uneven effect, and occasional drooping of eyelid. A vasovagal response to injection and anxiety are other rare side effects. Rarely lid droop, double vision, allergic reaction, difficulty swallowing, difficulty speaking, joint pain and incontinence in urination have been reported depending on where it is injected. No distant spread of the Botox effect had been seen.

HOW LONG WILL BOTOX EFFECT LAST?

The effect of Botox starts in two to three days and lasts up to four months. In rare cases there may be some effect for about six months esp. when repeated injections are done.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BOTOX WEARS OFF?

After the effect of Botox wears off the muscles return to the original state gradually and the wrinkles and frown lines return to the original state before the treatment.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER USES OF BOTOX?

Botox can be used to decrease the “smokers lines” around the mouth, correct a “gummy smile”, uplift the tip of nose, correct “bunny lines” around the upper part of nose, reduce the “sad smile” that happens as we age, give a “Nefertiti” lift to the neck, decrease the bands in the neck and reduce the Square face in Orientals to make it look more Oval.

HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT I AM GETTING AUTHENTIC BOTOX?

Allergan is the only maker of Botox. Only Licensed healthcare professionals can purchase Botox from Allergan. Each label of Botox has the “Allergan” hologram.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO GET BOTOX?

The treatment with Botox is minimally invasive. After an informed consent is taken your pre injection photograph is taken and you are given some ice to put in the area to be injected so that the area can get numb. Tiny injections are made with the smallest size needle in the muscles that are causing the wrinkles or the muscles we want to paralyze or weaken. Anesthesia is rarely needed. In very rare cases topical anesthetic could be applied half an hour before.

PRECAUTIONS THAT I SHOULD TAKE WITH BOTOX?

It is recommended that you do not stoop down or lie flat for the next six hours. You are advised to use the muscles that have been injected by frowning, smiling and looking up. It is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise for the next forty eight hours.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE HAPPY WITH THE BOTOX TREATMENTS?

Botox cosmetic is the most popular cosmetic procedure done in USA.

BOTOX FOR MIGRAINE AND OTHER HEADACHES?

In 2010 FDA approved Botox for the treatment of migraine and tension headaches. It decreases the severity and frequency of Migraine headaches. 100 to 200 units are injected in the forehead, in between the eyes and in the muscles around the scalp and back of neck. The treatments are repeated every three months. If the frequency of the headaches is more than fifteen times a month the insurance will pay for it in most cases.

BOTOX FOR EXCESSIVE SWEATING?

Excessive sweating in the underarms, palms of the hand and soles of feet can be treated by Botox. Excessive sweating can be quite embarrassing. Dilute Botox injected in these areas can reduce the incidence of sweating for up to six to nine months. Injections in the palm and soles can be painful so nerve block is given to numb the area before injection is done.

Administration of Botox is not recommended during pregnancy and breast feeding.
